Disney have released the first trailer for their upcoming sci-fi/fantasy movie A Wrinkle In Time. The teaser debuted at this weekend’s D23 expo, which is currently underway, and you can check it out up above.
A Wrinkle in Time stars a mighty impressive cast that includes Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Pena and Zack Galifianakis. The film is led by young actress Storm Reid (12 Years A Slave) and directed by Ava DuVernay, most well known for 2014’s Selma. In fact, DuVernay made history with that pic for being the first African-American woman to helm a movie with a budget of $100 million.
The upcoming blockbuster is based off the classic young adult novel of the same name written by Madeleine L’Engle in 1963. It was previously turned into a made-for-television film back in 2003, but this is its first big-screen adaptation, and if you’re curious to know more, here’s the official synopsis.
Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles Wallace, have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the concept known as a tesseract to travel there. Joined by Meg’s classmate Calvin O’Keefe and guided by the three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.
We’ve been looking forward to this one for a while now due to its incredible cast and talented director, and this first trailer definitely doesn’t disappoint. For starters, it perfectly captures the sense of wonder mixed with the extremely surreal tone that typifies the novel.
It looks gorgeous, too – it was filmed in New Zealand – and it’s great to see a big studio pic like this with such a diverse cast. All in all, this appears to be one of the most imaginative movies coming our way next year and we can’t wait to learn more about it.
A Wrinkle in Time arrives in cinemas on March 9th, 2018.
