Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines (the follow up to his indie hit Blue Valentine) has been very shy on the promotional front, but after earning rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival, the first footage has been released.
Today we get two clips from the film, one comes courtesy of HitFix and the other via The Playlist. The first one focusses on Bradley Cooper and the other on Ryan Gosling.
The clips are an enticing tease for the film, revealing not very much other than giving some insight into what could be a pair of terrific performances from Cooper and Gosling.
The film has been pegged as an intimate story which then transforms into an epic parable about family and particularly the importance of fatherhood. Furthermore, its scope is an attribute that many have favourably compared to The Godfather. High praise indeed.
The Place Beyond the Pines concerns a motorcycle stunt driver named Luke Glanton (Gosling), an emotionally tormented young father who considers a life of crime in order to provide for his newly born child. He goes into a partnership with a former bank robber that puts him on a collision course with a young cop named Avery Cross (Cooper).
The first clip, which is broken up with red carpet interviews with Cianfrance and Eva Mendes, focuses on Ryan Gosling and Ben Mendelsohn (the two partners in crime) who seem to have a fairly decent relationship. The second clip is between Bradley Cooper and Bruce Greenwood and is much more serious, with Greenwood interrogating Cooper in his hospital bed.
The Place Beyond the Pines has been picked up by Focus Features for distribution and although many critics are citing this as a film which could shake up the Oscar race, The Playlist also informs us that the plan isn’t to release the film until next year.
As of now, I’m fairly excited for the film, even though it is quite possibly a long way off. The idea of a sprawling family drama comparable to The Godfather is something that appeals to every film loving fibre of my being and I simply can’t wait to see it.
