We cannot even begin to conceive how one of the world’s biggest competitive video games could ever be adapted to the silver screen, but alas, there is a vision for such a Fortnite movie, if and when the time comes for Epic Games to start pitching such an idea to film studios.
Epic’s Chief Creative Officer Donald Mustard doesn’t see a Fortnite film on the horizon any time soon, but if the time were to come, he’s got a plan in mind for the story that he would want to tell, he revealed in a recent interview with Collider when discussing whether or not the wildly successful franchise would be following in the footsteps of the likes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie:
“I don’t know. To me, I wanna do stuff that always just feels authentic and is a great story. And so, it’s not something we’re actively working on right now. I’m not gonna say it would never happen. In fact, I mean, I know exactly how I would do the Fortnite whatever. Exactly. I know exactly the story I’d want to, but it’s not the focus right now. I don’t have time.”
So, while a Fortnite film doesn’t appear to be very high on Mustard’s list of priorities, apparently there’s some barebones idea percolating in his mind at the very least. What the plot, format (live-action or animated?) and cast of such a film would look like has us scratching our heads, but we’re curious nonetheless.
We also can’t help but wonder whether the movie would have the same multiversal shenanigans the game does. It sounds like a licensing nightmare, but having Star Wars characters, multiple anime protagonists, Geralt of Rivia, and a multitude of other franchises all in one place sounds like utter mayhem that we’d absolutely need to see unfold.
