The last we heard of Demonic – based on a story created by James Wan – came back in July of last year, when a release date for the horror flick was pencilled in for December 2014. In case you hadn’t noticed, December came and went with no sign of the paranormal caper. Were Dimension Films worried it would go unnoticed amid the wave of awards contenders cluttering up the festive season? It hardly seems like a concern for a genre effort like this, but whatever the reason, its first trailer has been unveiled in anticipation of a new release date.
Starring Maria Bello and Frank Grillo and directed by Will Canon, the story for Demonic originated in the spooky mind of horror maestro Wan. One of the key players in the recent resurgence in purposeful horror (i.e. stuff that’s actually scary), Wan’s name carries significant clout here even though he’s not behind the lens. One look over the synopsis, and you’ll notice his fingerprints all over it.
After a brutal college massacre, Bello’s psychologist and Grillo’s detective team up to figure out precisely what happened prior to the event. As is suggested by the title, it was probably something demonic.
With Wan in this stride, his name which serves as catnip for scare aficionados, certainly suggests a specific type of horror. By the looks of this trailer, there’s jump scares a plenty and a couple of solid turns from Bello and Grillo, who are each getting cosy in the genre. You can make your own mind up by checking out the trailer above, and let us know if you’re game for more haunted house hijinks when Demonic opens sometime this year.
DEMONIC centers on the aftermath of a horrific massacre where five college students were brutally murdered inside an abandoned home. Detective Mark Lewis and psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Klein question one of the few survivors who explains they were amateur ghost-hunters, seeking out paranormal phenomenon at the abandoned house, which was believed to be haunted. But what started out as a harmless activity turned into something truly terrifying.
