It was a cinematic magic trick that only M. Night Shyamalan could execute – revealing to the audience that Split and Unbreakable exist in the same universe.
Such an ambitious crossover led us to where we are today, on the verge of Shyamalan’s third and presumably final ‘super’ thriller. Its name? Glass, and after unveiling an appetizing little teaser a few days back, Universal has now lifted the lid on the threequel’s first official trailer, dropping it during their San Diego Comic-Con presentation earlier today.
Seen up above, the preview draws our attention to three superpowered individuals at the core of the film: David Dunn (Bruce Willis), the frail-bodied mastermind Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) and James McAvoy’s bat-shit insane character who has more personalities than we can count – Dennis, Barry, Patricia… and each is more unhinged and sociopathic than the last. Plot-wise, the trailer doesn’t give us a ton to go on, but it teases a dark and unsettling watch, and already, we’re sold.
While some may say the film’s nothing more than a Shyamalan-infused gimmick, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Glass is positively bursting at the seams with potential, not least because it looks to explore the many personalities residing within the mind of Kevin Wendell Crumb. In fact, McAvoy told Entertainment Weekly quite recently that “we get to spend some time with some new people that live inside Kevin.”
Of course, Anya Taylor-Joy is also back to reprise the role of Casey Cooke, where she joins Charlayne Woodard (Elijah’s mom) and Spencer Treat Clark (David’s son) for the 2019 thriller. The latter duo seemingly has a “big role” to play, though as this is an M. Night Shyamalan joint, perhaps it’s best to expect the unexpected.
Unbreakable, Split and now Glass, the third and presumably final installment in what’s shaping up to be a genre-bending trilogy. Its ETA? January 18th.
