For those tired of mainstream Tim Burton, the director of Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows, and clamoring for more gothic Tim Burton, the director of Edward Scissorhands and The Corpse Bride, you probably have Frankenweenie on your radar. We got our first look at the film in March’s teaser trailer and now Apple has the first full-length trailer.
The preview gives us the same emotional set-up as the teaser, going back over what we already knew: it’s the story of Frankenstein, only he’s bringing his beloved dog back from the dead.
What we get now is more of the consequences of young Victor’s (voiced by Charlie Tahan) decision to reanimate Sparky. Apparently, some of the other boys at school get the same idea and try to bring back other animals from the dead. Also, there are lots of angry villagers with torches.
Frankenweenie is a passion project of Burton’s and is being produced and released through Disney. It is based on his 1984 short film of the same name and it hits theaters in all its black-and-white glory on Oct. 5th.
To me, it looks to be a return to form for the always interesting director. I love the animation and design that Burton is going for and as always, the visuals will surely impress. I’m not sure how much mainstream appeal this one will have but I’m sure that hardcore Tim Burton fans will love it.
