When it was first announced that Jordan Peele of Get Out fame was producing a “spiritual sequel” to Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror movie Candyman, the first question on everyone’s mind was whether or not Tony Todd would reprise his role as the titular killer, with a lot of fans simply refusing to picture anyone else in the part.

So far, though, we’ve heard nothing on whether Todd will be involved in the film and not only that, but casting news in general has been pretty hard to come by. But thanks to SuperBroMovies, we now have our first bit of intel, with the outlet reporting that Get Out‘s Lakeith Stanfield is in talks to star as Anthony, the main character who’s described as a “socially pronounced artist in Chicago who researches the urban legend of Candyman. After investigating the killer’s last known whereabouts, strange killings begin to occur around him. ”

From what we understand, Anthony’s role in the plot will be similar to that of Helen Lyle from the original, who was played by Virginia Madsen. And though Peele or anyone else involved in the project have yet to confirm this scoop, it’s easy enough to see it being accurate, given how Stanfield’s star is pretty hot right now and he’s already worked with the aforementioned director in the past.

As it stands, we don’t know much more about the Nia DaCosta-helmed reboot aside from all that, but it was revealed last year that the film will be set in the “now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.” Regardless, there’ll be plenty of time to learn what’s in store for us before the new Candyman arrives on June 12th, 2020.

In the meantime, Peele’s Us will be making its way into theaters on March 15th and will undoubtedly be one of the year’s most exciting and interesting horror movies.
