After getting very up close and personal with Robin Thicke in the NSFW music video for his somewhat sketchy song “Blurred Lines,” model Emily Ratajkowski experienced an almost meteoric rise to fame, landing on the cover of GQ and bagging a key supporting role in this fall’s Gone Girl, a David Fincher-directed Oscar contender based on the thriller by Gillian Flynn. Now, she’s taking more steps to cement her current status as Hollywood’s new It Girl by signing on to star opposite Zac Efron in We Are Your Friends.
Max Joseph, co-star of MTV’s Catfish series, will be directing the film, which he scripted with Meaghan Oppenheimer working from a story by Richard Silverman. A coming-of-age drama, We Are Your Friends takes a look inside the worlds of electronic music and the Hollywood nightlife. As per Deadline:
“An aspiring 23 year old DJ named Cole (Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he knows he’s destined for.
In addition to Efron and Ratajkowski, We Are Your Friends is expected to co-star Jonny Weston (Insurgent), Shiloh Fernandez (Evil Dead) and Alex Shaffer (Win Win). It’s set to roll cameras on August 18th in San Fernando Valley.
We’ll be keeping a very close eye on this project. In addition to starring some very talented actors (Efron recently wowed with a hilarious lead role in Neighbors), We Are Your Friends is trying to capture the zeitgeisty atmosphere of EDM, which a few films have tried to do before but few have managed.
