Rumblings around Hollywood are causing some insiders to worry that Sony may not move ahead with The Girl Who Played With Fire, the sequel to David Fincher‘s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Fincher’s latest hasn’t been performing well at the box office and some are saying that if it doesn’t pick up, Sony may not go ahead with the next two sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.

At a $90 million dollar budget the film has under performed, disappointing the studio by only pulling in $60 million in the US thus far. That being said, that’s nothing to scoff at considering this is an R-rated film that is extremely dark and disturbing. In fact, the film’s box office performance isn’t bad at all, in my opinion at least.

That being said, despite the worries, Sony does intend to press on with the sequel. It is still set for a late 2013 release date and stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are said to be reprising their roles. The only unknown variable right now is director David Fincher, who has the option to direct, but hasn’t officially signed on yet.

Honestly, I enjoyed The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, it made my best films of 2011 list and while it wasn’t Fincher’s best, I thought it was a very well made film with a strong central performance from Rooney Mara. It would be a real shame if Sony abandoned their planned franchise so I’m happy to see that they still intend to go ahead with it.
