Given how excited fans were to see Robert Englund reprise the role of Freddy Krueger for an appearance in The Goldbergs, you can imagine that there’s a lot of demand out there for one more Nightmare on Elm Street with the original dream demon. And while producer Adam F. Goldberg did his part in helping to bring back the character, even he thinks that New Line Cinema could do one better.
The latest Goldbergs episode wasn’t the only nostalgic slasher event that horror fans have been treated to this month, with another being the latest Halloween movie, which reunited Laurie Strode and her old assailant Michael Myers for the first time in sixteen years. And after the critical acclaim and box office success of that sequel, Goldberg tweets that the time is right for Freddy to once more return to the big screen:
“Dear [New Line Cinema], if the new Halloween movie showed us anything this weekend… it’s that the world NEEDS horror movie villains. Robert said he’d never be Freddy again, but had so much fun when we shot he’s now open to it. I did my job, now you do yours!”
Goldberg isn’t just bluffing when he says that Englund would be up for doing another Elm Street, either. In a recent interview with Access Live, the actor mentioned that he may still have one last film left in him.
“I think they want to reboot the franchise, but they’re gonna need a new actor,” Englund told the show’s hosts. “They’re gonna need a new actor to play Freddy because they’re gonna have to do eight of them. I might have one left in me… but yeah.”
It should be noted that Englund is essentially trying to explain here why he probably won’t come back to the role, since it’s likely that the studio would want to play the long game with their franchise reboot.
But even if there wouldn’t be a lot of sequel potential in this final outing, the fan interest is clearly there. And when every horror movie these days feels the need to leave things open for a follow-up, it might actually be kind of refreshing to see a Freddy flick that serves as a definitive resolution to the character’s journey.
Could A Nightmare on Elm Street finally get its own Logan? Perhaps not, but stay tuned.
