Vin Diesel likes to talk, a lot. Over the years, the prolific actor has been known to create a lot of hype only for nothing to ever materialize. That’s not to say he’s a liar or can’t be trusted, but it’s always important to err on the side of caution when listening to what he has to say as he tends to get ahead of himself.
This is especially true when it comes to his Marvel films. After having voiced Groot in James Gunn’s Guardians in the Galaxy, the character has gone on to become a firm fan-favorite, and that’s saying a lot given that most people probably had no idea who he was before the 2014 movie. Loveable and loyal, he captured the hearts of audiences everywhere and now, he looks set to become even more beloved in the sequel, as he’s returning once again but only this time, he’ll show up in the form of Baby Groot.
Set to steal every scene he’s in, Baby Groot has become a big part of the marketing campaign for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and it’s not hard to see why. People are going crazy for the character, so much so that talk of a spinoff has now begun to arise. That’s something which isn’t lost on Diesel, as according to him, he’s already discussed the idea with Gunn.
Speaking to MTV, the actor revealed that a spinoff has been brought up and that he thinks it’d be interesting if it took place on the character’s home planet. We’d have to agree with him here, as showing us where Groot came from could be an exciting way to flesh him out a bit more, as we haven’t been given too much insight into his backstory yet.
Of course, we’d love to see Rocket feature in the spinoff as well, as the chemistry and interactions between the two characters is one of the highlights of not only the Guardians of the Galaxy series, but the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio knows this as well and we’re fairly confident that if a Groot spinoff ever did get off the ground, his buddy would be thrown in there, too.
As we mentioned before though, Diesel likes to talk. We don’t doubt that an idea for a spinoff has been brought up between him and Gunn, but this in no way means that it’s even close to coming to fruition. Marvel’s got their plate extremely full right now and spinoffs probably aren’t their main concern at the moment. First, they need to get Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 out the door and attend to the rest of Phase 3 before they can even begin exploring something like this.
Still, it’s nice to hear that Diesel is on board and hopefully, a Groot spinoff will become a reality in the not too distant future.
