After the box office success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earlier this year, it makes complete sense that Marvel are plowing ahead with a third movie in the franchise. And, with writer/director James Gunn back on board, the process of getting the ball rolling on it has proven to be very simple. In fact, the story treatment is already completed.
Speaking at E3, Gunn talked a little about how he’s getting stuck into work on the next outing, which he has a “really great” feeling about.
“I’m writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and I finished the first draft of the treatment yesterday. I’m excited about it. I feel really great about it.”
What do we know about Vol. 3 so far? Well, for starters, it’s been confirmed that it’ll be the final bow for both Gunn as director and the entire OG team of Guardians – meaning Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), etc. We also know that it’ll explore the cosmic side of the Marvel universe more in depth. Going by the teases in Vol. 2, it’ll also likely feature a bigger role for Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar and finally introduce Adam Warlock. Gunn’s also hinted that another Marvel superhero, Quasar, will make an appearance in the film, though that remains unconfirmed.
As for when it’ll arrive, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t go before the cameras until production on both Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel are over. The director has previously estimated that we could see it in cinemas in 2020, which would make sense, seeing as there was also a three year gap between the first movie and Vol. 2 – but again, we haven’t received any kind of confirmation on that just yet.
Until we do, you can look forward to seeing the Guardians in the aforementioned Infinity War, which arrives on May 4th, next year.
