Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is fast approaching, and fans of Marvel’s most bizarre team have had plenty of time to gear up for the waterworks that will no doubt come with the Guardians’ swansong. Indeed, with Dave Bautista’s imminent MCU departure, Nebula’s long-since-completed character arc, and the general dissolution of the team as we know it, no one seems safe from the clutches of fate going into this one.
The one exception to this, oddly enough, is Rocket Raccoon, the unsung lynchpin of the whole Guardians series who’s set to play his most important role yet, as ghosts from his past will end up prompting Star-Lord and co. to spring into action to protect their friend, even if that means making some sacrifices along the way.
But time and time again, the teasers and trailers for Vol. 3 seem a bit too zealous in teasing the demise of Rocket, and it’s gotten to a point where the folks of r/marvelstudios have begun to call Marvel’s admittedly obvious bluff.
Indeed, one user in particular quickly reminded everyone that Marvel, like any competent storytelling entity, prefers to keep its big reveals as secret as possible, despite what its employment of Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo might have you believe.
Other responders came rolling in with their predictions of who’s actually going to die, with Drax taking that cake by a rather extreme margin.
One interesting take suggested that Rocket will in fact be the only survivor of the film, which makes for a markedly interesting possibility; considering that James Gunn once posited Rocket as the loneliest being in the galaxy, how would a character like him even contend with an outcome like that?
Either way, we’re less than a month out from learning the true fate of these colorful heroes, and be it Drax, Mantis, Nebula, or everyone but Rocket, a surplus of tissues will certainly be in order.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will releases in theaters on May 5.
