‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ deleted scene finds James Gunn coming in for dubious praise

Was this really a good cut?

Now that we’re halfway through Secret Invasion, it’s safe to say that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains the uncontested high point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Phase Five. As much as we’re enjoying the political intrigue and Nick Fury’s daunting plight, the sheer heart that permeates all of James Gunn‘s comic book projects is on full display in Vol. 3, and that’s more than enough to keep it on top thus far.

Indeed, Gunn hardly ever misses, and according to Twitter, that’s true of his cutting room decisions as well, if the public’s opinion on a recently-unveiled Vol. 3 deleted scene is anything to go by.

In a deleted ending scene presented by IGN, Rocket can be seen trapping the High Evolutionary in a cage, making for a rather poetic – if thematically dodgy – final moment between the two, while Kraglin and Adam share a chuckle-worthy moment in which the former suggests Adam name himself Def Leppard.

Whether or not Gunn had a say in this scene not making the cut is anyone’s guess, but either way, people are giving the decision nods of approval all around, with a fair shake of responders citing the perfectly-paced ending as the reason why it should have stayed out of the final film.

There were a couple of supporters for this scene, and honestly, a couple extra seconds of getting to watch Chukwudi Iwuji act is an immensely valid reason.

Though, if you ask me, it was a mistake to leave at least something like this out of the final cut; it didn’t necessarily have to be this scene, but it nevertheless reveals a very important piece of information, namely the High Evolutionary’s survival, that should have been made available. We knew he was alive thanks to a tweet by Gunn earlier this year, mind you, but that’s not how we should find these details out.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available for digital download on Google Play and Prime Video.
