If you’ve been keeping a close eye on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 marketing blitz – and with a U.S. release date closing in fast, chances are you have – you may have uncovered a rumor doing the rounds today that suggested Vol. 3 is being angled as a prequel to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.
The report asserted that because the imminent Vol. 2 is set before the events of Captain America: Civil War, James Gunn and the creative team would maintain that time difference going into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the not-so-distant future. Not true, according to Gunn, who took to Twitter to essentially set the record straight with regards to where Vol. 3 slots into the MCU timeline.
It’s not the first time that the filmmaker has addressed the issue – just last week, and soon after signing on for the threequel, Gunn stressed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set after the events of Infinity War. Now, the director has gone one step further to confirm that, yes, it’ll also take viewers past the events of the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4.

It’s first of three Marvel movies penciled in for 2017 – Spider-Man: Homecoming and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok being the other two – and following its overseas debut, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is due to hit U.S. theaters on Friday, May 5th. Its box office total currently stands at an impressive $133 million, and over the coming days, that figure will only continue to climb. The only question now is, how far can James Gunn’s space opera go? We’ll find out in due time.
