Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the final chapter in James Gunn’s MCU space trilogy, and since Endgame opened the floodgates of casualty in the MCU and Phase Four continued that disturbing precedence by killing off multiple characters, a lot of fans are going into this threequel ready to get their heart torn into a million pieces.
This latest trailer seems to hint that Vol. 3 really is the end for Star-Lord and his gang of space misfits. The Guardians have had one heck of a blast saving the universe on multiple occasions and even banding with the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against Thanos, but as all good things must come to an end, so shall Peter Quill, Rocket, Drax, Nebula, Gamora, Mantis, and Groot face their greatest challenge in a conclusive third act when the flick arrives in theaters on May 3.
The official synopsis for GotG Vol. 3 seems to suggest the story will center around Rocket for a change, with the rest of the Guardians embarking on a quest to save their co-captain’s life. Peter also has to make things right with Gamora, who doesn’t even remember him after coming to this timeline from 2014.
Now that director James Gunn has his hands full with the DCU and all the forthcoming projects comprising its rebooted line-up, it’s highly unlikely for the Guardians franchise to make a return to the big screens, at least not in the foreseeable future. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the end for the team itself, as we still have plenty of team-up movies like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to look forward to.
Still, it might be prudent to expect a bittersweet end, if not exactly a tragic one.
