With Avengers: Infinity War now just a few days away from hitting digital platforms, fans are getting glimpses at some of the moments that failed to make the final two-and-a-half-hour theatrical cut of the Marvel blockbuster.
Following on from the quick appearance from Happy Hogan that leaked a couple of days ago, this latest deleted scene (which was shown at Comic-Con) features several of the cast from Guardians of the Galaxy, and true to their brand, the intergalactic crew are squabbling. The sequence takes place shortly after Gamora’s kidnapped by Thanos and sees Peter Quill fighting with Drax over his right to play “New York Groove,” a song by Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley, on repeat on his Zune. Mantis soon interjects to point out the yellow light that’s been blinking on their ship for several hours, not knowing that this indicates the reception of a coded message.
The messages turns out to be from Nebula, notifying the crew that “Gamora is alive and Thanos is taking her to Titan.” Peter notes down the coordinates, but not before chastising Drax for ignoring the blinking message light, prompting the Destroyer to deliver the scene’s cheekiest and most memorable line: “You said if it was yellow let it mellow, brown flush it down.”
It’s a fun little 2-minute sequence, though it’s easy to see why it was ultimately deemed unnecessary. By this point in Infinity War, the film is well on its way to its interplanetary climax, and a short scene of petty bickering and pee jokes would likely have slowed the pace, dampened the tension and disrupted the tone somewhat. Granted, the scene does serve the purpose of showing us how the gang knew to travel to Titan, but losing this small detail seems like a worthwhile sacrifice for keeping the plot moving.
There’ll no doubt be more unused footage where this came from when Avengers: Infinity War hits Digital on July 31st, followed by Blu-ray and DVD on August 14th.
