Though she’s dabbled in the action genre numerous times in the past (see: The Losers and Vantage Point), Zoe Saldana has become a stalwart of Hollywood’s sci-fi scene in recent years, appearing in the likes of Star Trek, Avatar and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

All three have since evolved into blockbuster franchises – especially James Cameron’s Avatar, given the filmmaker has rustled up plans for a full-blown universe involving the Na’vi, Sigourney Weaver, and post-war colonialism – ensuring that Saldana’s slate is packed to the rafters from now all the way into 2022. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the actress has no time for other roles outside the realm of science fiction. Case in point: Hummingbird, a new action-thriller that has tapped Zoe Saldana for a starring role.

Per Variety, Saldana is now set to headline Markus Kryler and Fredrik Akerstrom’s genre piece as a black-ops assassin whose latest assignment forces her to confront her true identity. Part Jason Bourne, part Jason Statham, it’s understood Fundamental Films has placed this one on the fast track, with Good Universe set to launch sales at next week’s Berlin Film Festival. Expect more casting news to be announced very soon indeed.

Beyond Hummingbird, Zoe Saldana is all set reprise the role of Gamora when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 checks into theaters on May 5th. There’s also chatter of Star Trek 4 beaming into production over at Paramount and Bad Robot, and it seems both studios won’t have much of a problem ensuring Saldana returns as Nyota Uhura. Finally, if James Cameron’s latest estimation is anything to go by, filming on Avatar 2 will begin this summer ahead of an expected release in December 2018.
