Unfortunately, for his upcoming film Pacific Rim, director Guillermo del Toro had to work within the confines of a PG-13 rating. Don’t get us wrong, the movie still looks fantastic and is testing extremely well but some of the director’s best work has come from when he had the freedom that an R rating allows.
That’s why we’re very excited to hear that for his next film, Crimson Peak, he plans to deliver a truly hardcore horror flick, one that won’t be held back by a PG-13 rating.
“It’s a very traditional Gothic romance,” del Toro told Fangoria, “and at the same time very modern in the sense that it has strong sex and violence. I’ve never done a movie that has anything remotely kinky, but this movie is a little kinky and the violence is very shocking. So you’re traversing through a tranquil Gothic romance, and all of a sudden this terrifying and sexual stuff comes in. It’s very much a haunted-house movie, but I don’t think there’s a ghost of a chance that we’ll get a PG-13 rating.”
So far, del Toro has assembled quite the cast for Crimson Peak, with Emma Stone, Benedict Cumberbatch, Charlie Hunnam and Jessica Chastain all set to star. Though we don’t know too much about the film just yet, del Toro has said in the past that it will be “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story,” one that will allow the director to “play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.”
Sounds good to us and if it indeed does get an R rating, then Crimson Peak is definitely going to be another hit for the always interesting director.
