Guillermo del Toro is in the highest tier of good books with Warner Brothers right now, so much so that according to a report from Latino Review, he is looking to develop an Avengers-style team-up epic entitled Heaven Sent, with supernatural DC Comics characters Deadman, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, Constantine Hellblazer, Phantom Stranger and others.
Del Toro’s upcoming project Pacific Rim, due out in 2013 and starring Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba, is reportedly testing so well that Warner Bros. is essentially giving him the keys to the kingdom; so far he has turned down offers to direct a film version of V and a sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
It seems he would rather return to comics, and with Justice League already in the works (due out in 2015 by the latest reports), Warner’s lawyers are working hard to clear the rights to these dark DC characters that are, shall we say, more suited to del Toro’s aesthetic sensibilities.
Granted, this is all still being classified as rumor, and if the project is indeed going forward, it won’t be coming together in the terribly near future. However, any news about big plans by a filmmaker like Guillermo del Toro, who hasn’t directed a feature since 2008’s Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, is most welcome. And even if this is all speculation being blown out of proportion, further confirmation that Pacific Rim is being received incredibly well is pretty positive news in itself. Between this and all the Star Wars news, it’s been quite the week for the naturally excitable movie fanboy nerd in us all.
