I am more than willing to watch just about anything Guillermo del Toro is involved in. But when the director sinks his teeth into the comic book world, things get even more exciting. On that note, del Toro recently dropped details on the DC Comics Dark Universe adaptation, which sounds increasingly exciting.

Del Toro told his WonderCon audience what to expect from the Dark Universe (or Justice League Dark) adaptation. The film will feature John Constantine recruiting his Justice League Dark team – including Swamp Thing, Deadman and Etrigan. More than that he will not say in terms of plot, except that it sounds like they will avoid telling a straight origin story. Instead, as del Toro remarked, ‘we get to their origin through the story.’ He plans to weave in the characters’ back stories and personal mysteries while encapsulating them all in a single plot.

Vague? Most definitely. But we should not expect anything more at this juncture. Del Toro is one of the hardest working directors/writers/producers in Hollywood.  Before he even thinks about the Dark Universe film, he still has to direct Crimson Peak. And without an official title or official screenwriter, it will be awhile before we have anything really solid on Dark Universe. He has finished the ‘bible’ on the film, however, and will apparently be announcing a screenwriter shortly.

Still, some exciting teases. I’m personally pleased that del Toro plans to hang out in the comic book world for awhile – if anyone can do justice to this material, he can.  He’s a director and producer with a penchant for knowing every in and out of his characters and their backstories, which is perfect for the complexities of a DC universe. I’m not a huge comic book fan, but I look forward to what he will accomplish with Dark Universe.

What do you think of del Toro’s little tidbits on the Dark Universe film? Will this appeal to everyone, or just comic book fans? Let us know in the comments.
