Guillermo del Toro Is Currently Writing Pacific Rim 2

With Pacific Rim arriving on Blu-Ray/DVD this week, people are starting to talk about the film again. After proving to be one of the most enjoyable blockbusters of the summer movie season, fans started demanding that a sequel be put into production. Though Pacific Rim 2 still hasn't received a green light (we know, we're just as shocked as you are), that hasn't stopped Guillermo del Toro from putting pen to paper and planning out the sequel's story.

With Pacific Rim arriving on Blu-Ray/DVD this week, people are starting to talk about the film again. After proving to be one of the most enjoyable blockbusters of the summer movie season, fans started demanding that a sequel be put into production. Though Pacific Rim 2 still hasn’t received a green light yet (we know, we’re just as shocked as you are), that hasn’t stopped Guillermo del Toro from putting pen to paper and planning out the sequel’s story.

Speaking to IGN to promote the Blu-Ray/DVD release of the film, del Toro had the following to say about Pacific Rim 2.

No, we are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.

To me, what was beautiful and flattering was how people saw the movie not once or twice but three, four times or more. People that love it, love it with great passion. So I would love to continue telling stories about that world.

Though it didn’t smash box office records, Pacific Rim still brought in a healthy $407 million worldwide for the studio, along with a ton of critical praise. With that in mind, I’d be surprised if they didn’t green light Pacific Rim 2. Really, I think it’s just a matter of time before we hear something official on this front. At the very least, it’s good to know that del Toro is actively working on the script.

Like most people, I found Pacific Rim to be a wildly entertaining film and am extremely eager for a sequel. There are so many directions that they can take the story in and so many elements left to explore that I can easily see them turning this into a trilogy, and I hope that they do.
