Though it’s set to continue into next weekend, the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival is at risk of becoming the Halloween show.
The horror-infused sequel from Blumhouse and writer-director David Gordon Green enjoyed its premiere at the annual showcase, where critics lumped praise on Green’s direction, the acting prowess of Jamie Lee Curtis, and the overall tone and feel of a movie that’s deeply embedded within the franchise lore – even if it ignores all other Halloween sequels.
One reviewer even went so far as to suggest that the Halloween of 2018 is a horror fan’s dream come true, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that David Gordon Green and his co-writers Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley have drawn up “ideas” for potential sequels, though we imagine these nascent continuations hinge on the film’s box office performance.
Said McBride:
You know, I think we were just kind of — in our early ideas of it — just like, ‘what would you do if you could?’ But I think both of us were just sort of trying to make sure we didn’t blow this one before we got ahead of ourselves and tried to make a whole universe out of it.
Asked straight-up if there are any ideas floating around for ‘Halloween 2’ (or whatever it winds up being called), McBride played coy, and simply confirmed that, “there are ideas, yeah.” So many questions, so few answers!
If you’ve been following Halloween closely, you’ll no doubt remember that the Blumhouse-backed revival was initially envisioned as two separate movies, meaning David Gordon Green and Co. would have had to film each picture back to back a la Avengers 3 and 4.
But that’s no longer the case, and Halloween is seemingly all the better for it. Will next month’s horror showcase spawn a sequel, though? That’s the question on everyone’s lips…
