The cast of Disney’s upcoming Han Solo spinoff has just grown a bit bigger today, as The Wire‘s Michael K. Williams is said to be climbing on board in a key role. Variety are the ones with the report, and while they didn’t disclose anything further, we expect him to be an important part of the plot.
The actor joins an already stacked cast, one which boasts Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Not bad, right? With production now well underway, we imagine that Williams is the last major addition to the spinoff, but at this point, it’s unclear.
Either way, the studio’s assembled an impressive list of talent so far to bring the movie to life and already, excitement’s starting to mount for what’s sure to be another strong entry into the Star Wars universe. Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One proved that these Anthology films could work just as well as the main saga outings and with directors like Phil Lord and Chris Miller behind the camera here, it’s most definitely going to be something quite special.
As for Williams, he’s a great supporting actor who’s been seeing his profile rise significantly ever since Boardwalk Empire. It’s hard to say how he might factor into things as far as the spinoff goes, since we know next to nothing about it, but it’s still nice to hear that he’s landed a key role, as he certainly deserves it.
Though the film’s release date is rumored to be slipping from May 2018 to December later that year, that hasn’t been confirmed just yet. As for what we can expect to see from the Han Solo movie, well, my predictions are fairly safe – if we’re doing an origin story, we’ll see him get a ‘life debt’ from Chewbacca, as well as acquire a shiny new Millennium Falcon. Maybe the film will even take inspiration from the now discarded extended universe, in which Solo began his career as an Imperial Officer before being dishonorably discharged for not torturing prisoners? That would be fun, right?
Regardless, there’s a lot to look forward to here and as soon as we learn more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
