Unlike his most ardent fans, Cavill is looking forward.

As recently as a few months ago, the future was looking bright for Henry Cavill‘s long-awaited return as Superman after he made a cameo appearance in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, before shooting a cameo for The Flash.

In the end, though, the exiled Kal-El has been left with nothing after James Gunn decided that neither he nor Dwayne Johnson were needed for the DCU’s latest overhaul, before the Scarlet Speedster’s solo debut sought to try and cut as many ties as possible with the SnyderVerse, leaving Cavill on the cutting room floor.

On the plus side, he has just wrapped shooting on Guy Ritchie’s World War II epic The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, but the film won’t even be securing a wide theatrical release after Prime Video swooped in to secure the international distribution rights. It’s been a tough time for the former Geralt of Rivia, then, but co-star Alan Ritchson has been showering him in plenty of praise as the hulking Reacher and Fast X alum revealed principal photography was over.

As well as Cavill and Ritchson, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare also features Eiza Gonzalez, Cary Elwes, Henry Golding, Til Schweiger, Alex Pettyfer, and many more among its ensemble cast, which will hopefully continue Ritchie’s recent hot streak that’s seen him knock out a string of reasonably acclaimed action-packed adventures in quick succession.

Fans would much prefer to see him as Superman, but that ship has unfortunately sailed for good, so it’s time to look forward.
