Playing an iconic superhero is a one way ticket to instant stardom, but the ticket comes with a cost. In an era where superhero films are dominating the industry, one fault could lead to a fallen hero. Such is the problem with playing arguably the most famous superhero, the one and only Superman. With a long line of actors in his shadow, Henry Cavill faces pressure that even the Man of Steel may not be able to lift.
Due to the success of Christopher Nolan’s Batman reboot, Man of Steel will bring the superhero into a darker, raw, and unforgiving world. With the focus on character emotion and environment instead of mere action and explosions, Cavill will need to get in touch with his inner X-Ray vision to break down the intricacies of Clark Kent.
In an interview with Cineplex, Cavill addresses the pressure – or lack thereof:
“…It’s important to do the role justice. There are a lot of people relying on me to do this well. I gladly accept that responsibility, and it’s a great one to have because it’s a wonderful opportunity. I don’t let the pressures get to me because that’s going to hinder my performance and, therefore, let people down. So I choose to ignore the pressure side of it and focus on doing justice to Superman.”
Just like a true hero, this Superman dons his armor and focuses on the task at hand instead of the pressure it comes with.
Looking at the well-received trailer, the feel of the film is definitely geared towards the right direction, but with only glimpses and no dialogue from Cavill, feel is not enough.
Nevertheless, director Zack Snyder has a penchant for noticing and casting just the right actors for his roles and with an opportunity like this, he surely thought long and hard about making the right decision.
Man of Steel is set to be released on June 14, 2013, a date that could spell kryptonite for Henry Cavill.
