“I’m what you call an ice-cold can of whoop-ass.”
Though the absence of a proper Fast and Furious movie is going to leave a car-shaped hole in the summer blockbuster schedule, it’s looking likely that the upcoming spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw will provide enough thrills to fill that gap.
As you can no doubt surmise by the title, the film focuses on Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw as they team up alongside new faces like Vanessa Kirby, Eiza Gonzalez, Eddie Marsan, Stephanie Vogt and, of course, Idris Elba, who’s playing the villain of the piece. It’s an enviable cast, the kind only a juggernaut franchise like this one can attract, and up above you can finally get your first glimpse of everyone in action – chief among them being Elba’s supercharged baddie, Brixton.
He seems to be the villain of the future, one who harnesses cutting-edge technology to give him an edge on the battlefield – so much so, in fact, that he’s able to send The Rock flying through the air with a single punch. Yes, it seems Idris Elba’s big bad is not to be trifled with.
Honestly, though this does look like more of the same for the franchise, I just can’t say no to a hi-octane action flick featuring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba and a garage load of extreme rides. And I’m sure that many people will feel the same. Not to mention that the action here does appear to be very well choreographed and slick, with a few very exciting teases of some sure to be epic set pieces.
With any luck, then, Hobbs & Shaw will serve as more than just a retread of the Fast and Furious movies but with a smaller cast. If nothing else, though, we’re pretty sure that David Leitch can deliver a few physics-defying spectacles when the spinoff drives into theaters on August 2nd.
