The word “remake” is enough to send a wave of groans around a room, message board, or most any relevant space. That’s perhaps especially true with the high-flying year that the horror genre just had, meaning there are fewer excuses to indulge in such a trend. Scream VI may prove to be a fresh-against-the-odds outlier here, but let’s not forget the sour note that the Halloween reboot trilogy ended on.
Sometimes, once a few more details beyond “remake” have been shaken out, it’s not much of a stretch at all to warm up to such an idea, and a recent discovery for one Redditor just might be the example we need to prove that.
It’s only new news for the original poster, but one Jordan Peele, the mastermind behind such works as Nope, Us, and the Best Picture-nominated Get Out, is pegged as a producer for an upcoming remake of The People Under the Stairs, a horror comedy from Wes Craven (aka the man who literally created the Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises) known for its satirization of capitalism, gentrification, and class warfare.
And with Peele famously being no stranger to social commentary in his own films, responders were quick to agree that he’s the right man for such a job.
Of course, not everyone was capable of shaking the stigma that comes with the mere thought of a remake, and given how distinctly beloved the original People Under the Stairs is, we could forgive them.
Either way, any addition to the Peele pipeline is always a welcome prospect, and with the daunting objective of doing Wes Craven proper justice hanging over his and the rest of the creative team’s head, it will be infinitely interesting to see what comes of this particular retread.
