And while most heavily criticized projects have to do with either the film’s muddled narrative or lackluster performances, upcoming horror Nefarious is being slandered on a completely different playing field. Instead, the feature’s reputation is currently being dragged through the mud due to past projects from its aberrant creators.
Over on the r/horror subreddit, the movie has quickly become a hot topic, with disgruntled genre fanatics ripping the project to shreds for its Christian agenda being marketed as horror. Carnage has ensued in the replies, where hundreds of Redditors have insisted that Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon, the creators behind the Christian drama God’s Not Dead, have graduated from pushing religion in the 2014 film to making that the main focus in their new horror project.
As to be expected, a parade of spooky die-hards congregated in the comments and offered up their own two cents on the subject matter — with remarks ranging from disgust to others implying that Nefarious will be a “horrible” movie that is definitely not needed in the genre.
Considering the controversial movie currently holds a less-than-favorable 30 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, it feels fair to say that horror fans won’t have to worry about the film being pushed down their throats for very long. Then again, when you stop and think about how a project like Morbius often remains in the spotlight, then maybe the God’s Not Dead creators will prove that controversy isn’t a killer.
