After the false start provided by X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Wade Wilson has gone on to become almost as big a screen star as his adamantium-clawed friend, creating fresh demand for a pair-up that actually does these characters justice. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long after the Deadpool series took off that Wolverine delivered his swan song in last year’s Logan, and these days, Hugh Jackman is heavily downplaying the idea of ever seeing these characters share the screen.
While promoting his new movie The Front Runner, the Australian actor confirmed that he has no plans to reprise his role opposite the Merc with a Mouth, as much as Ryan Reynolds seems to want it:
“No, but Ryan is relentless. He keeps coming back to me in all these ways, shapes and forms. I just said, ‘You know, I just don’t think the world really wants to see Deadpool with Wolverine.’ Maybe a cameo from Deadpool? I just think it runs over it for Deadpool.”
Though these comments may be disappointing to fans, they shouldn’t come as too great a surprise, with Logan providing some definitive closure to the character’s journey that a comeback would surely tarnish.
But while we probably won’t be seeing Wolverine and Deadpool crossing paths anytime soon, the two actors have been entwined in a long and eventful troll war that continued with Reynolds reportedly saying that Jackman could use the career boost from this crossover, to which Jackman responded:
“Oh, really? That’s nice of him. He’s throwing me a bone? Got it. You know that term, dag, I mentioned? A dag is a goofball in American. It’s a goof. You’re such a dag, Ryan!”
Nonetheless, you shouldn’t expect this interview to be the last we hear of the possibility of Jackman coming back to the X-Men franchise. Earlier this year, Reynolds even expressed an interest in getting his old co-star to play himself in the planned X-Force film, and while it remains to be seen whether such an idea will become reality, it at least sounds like a more realistic suggestion than the return of the original Wolverine.
As for the character’s own future, Jackman has offered his assurances that Logan will be back, but with another actor in the role.
