When it comes to horror fans – especially those who were around in the 1980’s – there seem to be three main series featuring iconic headliners that have stuck with us throughout the years: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and Friday the 13th. Carried by Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, respectively, lovers of each film franchise still debate which is superior to this day.
Personally, I have a harder time settling on which is numero uno the older I get, but the Nightmare line boasts the most amount of flicks that I enjoy, so I guess I’ll lean toward that one. Hey, not every entry into a series is going to be great – or even watchable. Plus, I owned the NES and board games as a kid, so there’s the nostalgia factor.
While most of Freddy’s cinematic exploits came during the era of Reaganomics and “Where’s the Beef?,” the Springwood Slasher has experienced his share of aesthetic changes with each outing. And thankfully, we now have a hilarious and clever animated video by way of the folks at Tell It Animated (seen above) to accompany us on the trip down memory lane.
At first, I thought they’d just go over the changes to costuming and makeup – and they do – but we’re also given a succinct retelling of how Freddy was defeated in each movie. In fact, some sound downright silly when explained so bluntly.
I also couldn’t help but notice how the narrator brought up Freddy vs. Jason‘s grossly lopsided kill count (high five, my good man), but also didn’t seem to favor the 2010 remake. Call me crazy, but I actually dug the series’ return to a darker, more disturbing tone, even if some changes were made to the mythos.
