Is Spidey's next movie (wall)crawling to a halt?

While those taking part in it are undoubtedly on the right side of history, the writers’ strike is proving to be the bane of Marvel Studios’ existence right now as so many of its productions have been hampered in some way by the not insignificant hitch of Hollywood’s screenwriters abandoning their keyboards. Thunderbolts, Wonder Man, Daredevil: Born Again… Even Deadpool 3 to some extent have all been affected. And, so it seems, has Spider-Man 4, as Peter Parker himself Tom Holland has now revealed.

At the premiere of Apple TV Plus’ psychological drama The Crowded Room (in which Holland is reminding folks of the Joker more than the webhead), Holland was inevitably asked about what’s next for his Marvel career. When Variety quizzed him on the state of Spider-Man 4, however, the 27-year-old actor stressed that he can’t say much — mostly because nothing is happening right now because of the WGA strike action.

“I can’t talk about that, but I can say that we have been having meetings. We’ve put the meetings on pause in solidarity with the writers,” Holland said. “There’s been multiple conversations had, but at this point it’s very, very early stages.”

Holland’s comments echo what Sony producer Amy Pascal recently said on the topic at the premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Putting their responses together, it seems we can safely say that scriptwork on Spider-Man 4 is a long way from beginning, even without the strike, seeing as things are only at the meeting stage. In other words, a fourth solo outing for Peter 1 is several years away. Sorry, guys.

At least, we have plenty of other Spider-People to keep us entertained, thanks to the aforementioned Across the Spider-Verse filling up theater screens worldwide with approximately a bazillion wallcrawlers. Plus, there’s Beyond the Spider-Verse following next March. Nevertheless, let’s hope Sony and Marvel can swing is so Spider-Man 4 gets going before too long.
