There is a filmmaker out there with the first name of James who loves to debunk rumors on a regular basis, but he’s the co-CEO of DC Studios and actively enjoys pouring cold water on speculation. James Cameron, however, very rarely – if ever – feels the need to address internet scuttlebutt head-on, but today seems to be the day where he breaks the the habit of a lifetime.
As one of the world’s foremost and most famous deep sea explorers that’s made upwards of 30 journeys down to the wreckage of the Titanic in submersibles that he himself helped design, it was inevitable that the Academy Award-winning filmmaker would be one of the first names the media looked to for comment in the face of the Titan tragedy.
He was fairly scathing, admittedly, but that came from a place of knowledge and expertise. As unsavory as it sounds, somebody is definitely going to make a movie about it one day, and the churn of misinformation swiftly ended up pointing in the Avatar architect’s direction. Of course, this is where Cameron flew in the face of his social media presence to make a rare detour into clearing the air, stating the truth in no uncertain terms.
Even if he wanted to turn the Titan incident into a feature film – which would be questionable given how publicly he criticized the methodology and execution of the ill-fated trip – he’s bogged down in Pandora for the foreseeable future anyway, and it’s not as if Cameron is going to rush into turning a real-life fatal event designed with the intention of visiting a wreck he’d already covered in live-action would speak to him from a professional standpoint.
