“Look at me. I’m Black Superman.” So says Idris Elba’s Brixton Lore in the new trailer for Hobbs & Shaw, which looks set to be the most insanely over the top entry in the Fast and Furious universe to date.
The cyber-genetically enhanced terrorist leader and a criminal mastermind is apparently in a bad mood because his virus capable of wiping out half the population was stolen by MI6 field agent Hattie Shaw, played by Vanessa Kirby of Mission: Impossible – Fallout and The Crown fame. And since Hattie is the sister of Deckard Shaw, it becomes a matter of family for Jason Statham’s mercenary.
Naturally, federal agent Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson, also gets mixed up in all of this world-threatening drama, forcing him to team up with Shaw in a mission to take down Brixton while fighting the urge to kill his new partner first. From the look of things, the film intends to make full use of the chemistry first displayed between the duo in the main Fast and Furious films. Even in the midst of fighting the bad guys, the pair still find time to trade a few verbal blows.
The trailer also offers a glimpse of Eiza González of Baby Driver and Alita: Battle Angel fame in the role Madame M., while Helen Mirren plays Deckard and Hattie’s mother Magdalene Shaw. And speaking of family, Johnson’s relative Roman Reigns can be seen striking an imposing figure in the new preview.
On directing duties, meanwhile is Atomic Blonde helmsman David Leitch, adapting a script from Fast and Furious regular Chris Morgan. That’s certainly a lot of talent both in front of and behind the camera, and we’ll find out how the franchise’s first spinoff stacks up against the main series when Hobbs & Shaw hits theaters on August 2nd, 2019.
