According to MTV, it may be a while before we see the big green guy get his own solo film again.
Marvel has a number of films in the works and over the next few years we’ll be seeing the solo return of Thor in Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man in Iron Man 3, Captain America in Captain America: The Winter Solider and of course, we’re also seeing the debut of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man.
It seems odd that fan favorite The Hulk isn’t on the slate but according to Marvel President of Production, Kevin Feige, it may be a while before we see him have his own solo film. In fact, we may need to wait until after The Avengers 2.
“I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe. ’Planet Hulk’ is a cool story. ‘World War Hulk’ is a cool story… I think there are pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself. It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I’d say everything is on the table.”
“Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in ‘Avengers’? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until ‘Avengers 2. So there’s a lot of time to think about it.”
It’s understandable that the studio is hesitant about giving Hulk his own project again. The Incredible Hulk was the lowest grossing film of the bunch and it would make sense for Marvel to want to focus on other things. As Feige notes though, Mark Ruffalo did an excellent job with the character, so it doesn’t look like the studio has written off another solo film for The Hulk just yet.
“Part of what’s fun about the way we played him in ‘Avengers’ is the ensemble quality of it. I think the pathos and humor, most importantly, that Mark and Joss brought to it showcased a different element of Hulk that’s there in the comics, and was always inherent in his character. But when he was so brooding in his other two films, he didn’t get to have that wry sense of humor that Mark did such an amazing job performing.”
As for where The Hulk will show up next, it’s assumed that he’ll pop up again before The Avengers 2, so expect a cameo in one of the upcoming Marvel films. In regards to a solo Hulk effort though, we may have to wait a little while.
