Ever since it was announced that Pixar’s beloved animated superhero movie The Incredibles would be getting a sequel, fans have been wondering what form it would take. Would it move the Parr family forward a few years to when the kids are more grown up? Would it be about the next generation of Incredibles, featuring Dash and Violet’s children?
As it turns out, virtually no time at all will have passed for the Parrs by the time The Incredibles 2 begins. Speaking at the D23 expo, Disney and Pixar chief John Lasseter revealed that, in his own words, just “a minute” would separate the events of the two movies.
“It starts right as the first one finishes, so it just carries on … It starts with the Underminer and a big old set piece. You know that at the end of the first movie when he comes up and you see the family dressed as superheroes, well that’s where [we] start this movie.”
Fans of the 2004 original will remember that the film ends when supervillain The Underminder rises up out of the ground to terrorize the good people of Metroville. In the crowd, the Parrs – Bob, Helen, Dash, Violet and even baby Jack-Jack – don their domino masks and get to ready to change into their superhero outfits.
Lasseter also took the time to praise director Brad Bird for coming up with “such a special story,” while assuring fans that the second movie will continue the important theme of family from the first:
“One of the unique things about The Incredibles is it’s really a story of a family set in the world of superheroes. This one carries on that theme. It’s awesome, the idea we came up with — simple as that. … We love to really look at our own lives and look at what’s going on, and find themes that we know will resonate with the audience.”
The Incredibles 2 is set to land in cinemas on June 15th, 2018.
