In 1996, director and all-round master of cinematic spectacle Roland Emmerich pushed the Doomsday Clock worryingly close to midnight, forcing the governments of the world to unite against a common, galactic enemy.
One battle cry from Bill Pullman’s POTUS later and by the time the credits rolled on Independence Day, humanity had triumphed – warding off an extinction event with one tactfully placed tin of Coca-Cola and a computer virus, of all things. For Independence Day: Resurgence, though, Emmerich is ensuring that those extra-terrestrials bring the cavalry to seek their revenge.
Maintaining the gung-ho nature of its forebear, 20th Century Fox has premiered a new poster, clip and TV spot for the tentpole sequel, and at this stage it’s really a wonder that there’s still any footage left to show.
Headlining the cast of humans ready to fight against extinction are Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Brent Spiner, with a host of newcomers that includes Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward, along with Jessie Usher and Liam Hemsworth, who take the fight to the aliens as two rival pilots under the Earth Space Defense program.
Look for Independence Day: Resurgence to push humanity close to the brink of extinction once more when Roland Emmerich’s long-awaited sequel looms over theaters on June 24.
We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
