A brand new teaser for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny swung into existence during the Super Bowl, and, while we’ll continue to hold our breath for anything but a repeat of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the high-octane, almost celebratory nature of this new footage looks to be a big step in the right direction for the franchise.
Indeed, Indy looks to have aged like fine wine (partly due to CGI, partly due to Harrison Ford himself), as has his punch-happy attitude towards Nazis, and with promises of some more expertly-crafted action scenes reminiscent of the old days, complete with fights on moving cars and falling out of airplanes, Jones’ swansong is shaping up to be the must-see we were hoping for.
Set in 1969, Dial of Destiny sees the ever-zestful Harrison Ford return to the role of the eponymous adventurer, who finds himself going toe-to-toe with a posse of Nazis hired by NASA to compete with Russia in their race to the moon. Joined by his goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridges), Indy must thwart the plot of Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), a visionary Nazi (visionary, of course, being the worst trait a Nazi can have) who hopes to use the Apollo moon landing program to his advantage.
John Rhys-Davies also makes a triumphant return to the franchise as Sallah, Jones’ longtime friend who first appeared in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and later returned in The Last Crusade as a crucial ally to the protagonist. Elsewhere, Antonio Banderas is set to portray Renaldo, another ally of Jones, and Boyd Holbrook, having honed his villain chops quite enchantingly as the Corinthian in Netflix’s The Sandman, will play the role of Klaber, a Nazi and right-hand man to Mikkelsen’s Jürgen.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will release to theaters on June 30.
