Despite rumors to the contrary, Avengers: Infinity War arrived on home video with four – count ’em, four – deleted scenes, totaling just over 10 minutes of never-before-seen footage.
So while some fans had come to expect an extended three-hour cut replete with Thanos’ mysterious backstory, Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers kept the number of deleted scenes to four – even if some are more disposable than others. That said, there is one deleted scene, in particular, that Joe and Anthony Russo wanted to keep. Spoilers: it involves the Guardians of the Galaxy (sans Gamora) parked up at Knowhere soon after their initial encounter with Thanos.
Entitled “The Guardians Get Their Groove Back,” it’s undoubtedly a fun and frivolous scene of Star-Lord and Drax bickering on board the Milano, but you can see why the Russo Brothers ultimately decided to leave it on the cutting room floor.
There’s a Guardians scene that’s on the DVD that was very hard to cut because it’s so entertaining – but we just didn’t need it for the thrust of the film at that moment.
Also featured in this particular deleted scene is Mantis (Pom Klementieff), who informs her bickering crewmates of some news. Turns out the coded message channel has been emitting a strange yellow glow for the past five hours, where Star-Lord discovers that Nebula has managed to beam out a distress signal, ultimately leading to the moment when the Guardians cross paths with the Avengers – namely Doctor Strange, Spidey, and Iron Man – for the very first time. “I’ll do you one better, why is Gamora?!”
All of this (and much more!) is included on the Avengers: Infinity War Blu-ray. And it’s available right now across all major platforms.
