UPDATED: Insidious: Chapter 2 Trailer Impressions

Wow, is 2013 going to be a hell of a year for horror or what? James Wan's first film The Conjuring hasn't even hit theaters yet (it will be released July 19th), yet tonight I found myself at a special event for the World Premiere screening of the very first trailer for Wan's second directorial effort of 2013, Insidious: Chapter 2.

Wow, is 2013 going to be a hell of a year for horror or what? James Wan’s first film of the year, The Conjuring, hasn’t even hit theaters yet (it will be released July 19th), yet tonight I found myself at a special event for the World Premiere screening of the very first trailer for Wan’s second directorial effort of 2013, Insidious: Chapter 2.

Being that Insidious was hands-down one of my favorite horror movies of 2011, I was giddy with anticipation during the initial cocktail hour which calmed the ravenous group of horror fans waiting for the first taste of Wan’s much anticipated sequel. Could it live up to the overnight success of Wan’s original?!

Entering the theater with our free Insidious: Chapter 2 swag (cool little plastic lanterns to lead us into “The Further”), everyone hustled to find seats and the lights dimmed. It was finally here.

Opening with shots of the original cast (who are all returning), we’re reminded of the events from Insidious and it’s made pretty clear this is a chronological follow-up to Wan’s original. Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne), Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins), Foster Lambert (Andrew Astor), and their baby sibling are all back and ready to put the past behind them, as Josh informs us his family is moving into his mother Lorraine’s (Barbara Hershey) house.

Little do they know though that the evils haunting them aren’t just tied to their home, as Renai witnesses the first paranormal occurrence in the trailer. She sees a baby walker wheel itself into the hallway she’s looking in, which causes her to investigate, obviously. From here, she notices a female apparition sitting on the couch, watches her get up, but then loses her as the apparition doesn’t continue into the next room. Instead, we revisit the old baby monitor communication trick, and Renai yet again hears voices in her baby’s room. She runs to the stairwell, but doors start shutting all around her. It’s made pretty evident that the hauntings have nothing to do with their old house.

Renai informs her family of the incident and this starts a bevy of quick cuts which show numerous details. For one, we catch glimpses of our original ghost hunters back for more action, but this time with a new psychic leader. He’s seen performing a seance in an antique looking old room, but instead of using the gas-mask like Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) did, he rolls die which spell out his answers.
