Protect the Bay at all costs. That’s the underlying message found in today’s pair of international trailers for Paramount’s Baywatch movie, but you better believe that Dwayne Johnson’s Mitch Buchannon and the gang are going to have some fun while doing so.
Held up as the elite of the elite, the core Baywatch team is comprised of Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera and Jon Bass, who all band together to combat Priyanka Chopra’s power-mongering oil tycoon – and save a few lives along the way, of course. There’s not an awful lot of new footage when considering the film’s original, raunchy trailer, but between the two promos, you’ll no doubt be able to locate a handful of new shots and gags to sate your appetite.
Among them is a scene of Zac Efron’s heartthrob Matt Brody describing one particular plan of attack as so: “Everything you guys are talking about sounds like a really entertaining but far-fetched TV show.” It’s another example of the meta, tongue-in-cheek nature of Paramount’s wildly over-the-top redo, and something that also evokes memories of Sony’s handling of the Jump Street franchise – a dormant TV series is overhauled for the big screen, replete with an R rating, starry cast and cracking jokes. But will Baywatch achieve a similar success in a few months’ time?
Paramount plans to rally the Avengers of the Beach in time for May 26, 2017, when Baywatch will go up against Power Rangers at the international box office. Screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift turned in the latest rendition of the script, with Sony’s Jump Street franchise being a clear inspiration.
