Marvel‘s Iron Man 3 was undoubtedly one of the best blockbusters, if not the best, to hit screens in the summer of 2013, and that was in no small part thanks to Drew Pearce’s smart, often hilarious script. And though he’s now a hot commodity in Hollywood because of his work for Marvel, Pearce doesn’t feel that he’s done with superheroes yet.
During an interview with SciFiNow today, Pearce said the following:
This next phase has such a good bunch of directors, from the Russos, who by all accounts have knocked it out the park with Captain America 2 – I’ve seldom heard buzz from the editing room as good as that movie. Avengers 2 will be Joss Whedon’s baby, and reaction to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy has been brilliant. Even after the tough journey of two and half years making Iron Man 3 as good as it can be, I don’t just have respect for Marvel as unit; I’m honored for my time there, and I’m constantly talking to them about what we do next.
If Pearce does end up back at Marvel working on another project, it won’t be much of a surprise, considering the writer earned his stripes in another super-powered project – ITV2’s No Heroics – before coming to Marvel in 2010 to pen a screenplay for their comic-book series Runaways, pictured above.
That series, created by Brian K.Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, centered on a group of teenagers who, after learning that their parents are part of a team of super-villains called the Pride, flee and unite to become a force for good. Pearce has made no secret of his love for the series, saying at Comic-Con in 2012 that:
“I’ve loved that comic book since the day it came out. And I think Brian K. Vaughan is pretty much a genius. … Truthfully, I’d do anything to get that movie on the big screen. Not anything, but quite a lot.”
And at the speed with which Marvel is currently expanding its Cinematic Universe, a Runaways adaptation likely won’t be far off, especially with the enthusiasm Pearce has shown for the project.
In fact, the only obstacle I foresee for Pearce collaborating with Marvel in the near future might be his own busy schedule. Ever since his time at Marvel, the writer has been one of Hollywood’s most wanted; Pearce is currently penning Sherlock Holmes 3 for Warner Bros, doing a re-write of Legendary’s Godzilla reboot and working on Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 5.
What project would you like to see Pearce take on next for Marvel? Does Runaways sound like a surefire hit, or would his talents be better spent on another project in the company’s still-inchoate Phase Three? Sound off in the comments section.
