The rumor mill for who will star in Superman: Legacy has been spinning really wildly lately. From celebrities confirming that they didn’t audition for the film, and James Gunn revealing that only one person has been cast in the film, it’s anyone’s game to guess who will be in the upcoming DC reboot.
Recently, a new round of casting rumors was reported by The Wrap. While it’s currently unknown who got the role, Reddit user u/not-a-simp9842 has guessed that David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Emma Mackey, would be the top contenders for Superman, Lex Luthor, and Lois Lane. It makes enough sense if you think about the casting criteria that Gunn’s going for, which was younger actors. He also wanted to cast some new faces alongside Hollywood staples.
This rumored lineup received mixed reactions from fans, especially for the casting of Lex Luthor and Lois Lane. There was a consensus that they’d rather have someone older to play Lex Luthor rather than someone who’s the same age as Superman. Case in point, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman.
But let’s not forget that Hoult already starred in some big titles, such as X-Men: Days of Future Past and Mad Max: Fury Road. So it would make sense for him to play a major role in a future blockbuster, even if it ended up being a bad guy.
As for Lois Lane, while Mackey is a good actress, especially since she’ll be in the upcoming Barbie movie and did an amazing job in Sex Education, fans claimed that there are other actresses, like Samara Weaving or Rachel Brosnahan, who would be better fits for the role.
Regardless, we think this lineup would suit what Gunn wants in his upcoming Superman reboot. It’s a lot of new faces in the industry, with some slowly gaining recognition. At the same time, the actors already have experience and there are people who already know them for their work.
At the end of the day, it’s up to DC to decide who will star in this upcoming Superman reboot. And just as Gunn said, only one person has been cast so far to star in the superhero blockbuster.
