In many ways, Justice League was like an appetizer for what’s to come in the DC Extended Universe. Assuming all goes well, we’ll get to know the likes of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ezra Miller’s Flash and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg a lot better in many more movies to come. Another new face it introduced though was J.K. Simmons’ take on Commissioner Gordon, who fans can’t wait to meet properly in the upcoming Dark Knight standalone The Batman.
Not that things are moving very fast on that front, mind you. Simmons was talking to Collider recently when the subject of further appearances for Jim Gordon came up. The actor revealed that he hasn’t yet had any contact with Matt Reeves, who’s helming the Bat’s standalone pic, though he is looking forward to “expanding a little bit” on his iteration of the iconic character.
“Assuming that we’re gonna go forward, the way we think it will, I’m really looking forward to that. Hopefully, it will be really fun and the character will expand a little bit, particularly in the stand-alone Batman movie. There will be more to do. I guess it’s Matt Reeves now for that one, who I haven’t met. So, it will be a whole new collaborator to get together and work with, hopefully.”
Don’t get too worried, Gordon fans. The fact that Simmons hasn’t yet met with Reeves is completely understandable at this stage. Though once upon a time a Ben Affleck-directed version of The Batman was meant to have arrived either this year or in 2019, things are moving a lot slower now.
For one, rumour has it that Affleck is still deciding whether to appear in the flick or not. So if something as major as the film’s leading man hasn’t even been nailed down yet, it’s no surprise that a supporting player like Simmons is still waiting to meet with the director.
In the meantime, you can relive the actor’s sole appearance as Jim Gordon to date when Justice League hits Blu-ray/DVD on March 13th (pre-order here).
