James Franco‘s The Broken Tower, a biopic about the obscure poet Hart Crane, has been given a release date by its distribution company, Focus Features. They will release the film digitally on January 10th, 2012.
Franco wrote, directed and starred in the controversial black and white film late last year, which Focus picked up for distribution just after it premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in July. The film received mostly positive reviews though some found the film to be too ‘arty’, with one critic saying the film will “serve better as his thesis film than as a commercial release.”
The film’s controversy however, comes from a 10 minute scene of Franco’s face, as Crane recites a poem and another scene where the audience see Crane performing an explicit sexual act on another man.
Among Franco fans, and fans of artistic cinema, The Broken Tower will surely be a massive cult hit, with it already scoring 8.2 on IMDb and at one point reaching as high as 9.4.
The Broken Tower stars James Franco, Michael Shannon, Stacey Miller, Vince Jolivette and Dave Franco, and will be released on January 10th, 2012.
