On one hand, the idea of constantly engaging in Twitter fights – however relatively tame they are – doesn’t exactly evoke the greatest image in one’s mind. On the other, however, if you have a fire Twitter game and aren’t a complete douchebag, why not set the odd ridiculous record straight? With respect to that, we have no problem watching James Gunn stand up for himself, even if his attackers tend to dig a hole for themselves right out of the gate anyway.
Having recently named his top five comic book films of all-time, Gunn’s most recent detractor used this information to accuse Gunn of cooking up Superman: Legacy as a mishmash of Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman (which was the second title on his list) and Wonder Woman 1984 of all things.
This, of course, is an incredibly bizarre thing to say, and Gunn himself was happy to point out that just because he loves Richard Donner’s Superman, in no way does that mean he’s going to copy its aesthetic; Gunn’s résumé is more than enough proof that he has his own creative chops.
That being said, we wouldn’t be the least bit upset if some of Gunn’s favorites end up inspiring some corners of the DCU. Indeed, if there’s anything in Gunn’s arsenal that can match his filmmaking talent, it’s his taste in comic book adaptations; a taste that includes Oldboy, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Deadpool, and David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence.
Superman: Legacy will release to theaters on July 11, 2025.
