For those wondering exactly when James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy will take place in the life of Kal-El/Clark Kent, he’s provided more information in true Gunn style — by disputing a claim made by the Hollywood trades.
While reporting on the casting of British actor David Corenswet as the new Superman and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane, Variety mentioned that the film would be a “workplace origin story,” which doesn’t even make sense as a clause. (Do they mean the launch of the Daily Planet as a newspaper?)
But the r/DCEUleaks subreddit is here to save the day, finding a tweet where Gunn answers a fan question about the “workplace origin story” pitch:
As much as we would have loved to see All the Kryptonian’s Men, Gunn’s answer feels like a more sensible way to launch his New DCU. There’s a lot of drama to mine in Clark’s early years as a reporter, as that’s likely his first chance to reckon with how much pain and misery is occurring across the globe. Remember: As a young man, Clark grew up literally siloed from the rest of the world on the farm planes of Kansas.
We’re also looking forward to Clark learning his “sharp, punchy prose style” that Perry White mentions in 1978’s Superman: The Movie, a favorite film of Gunn’s. For those who aren’t Strunk and White stans, we’re sure it won’t take long before Clark must duck out of the newsroom and engage in some good-natured butt-kicking behind the iconic “S.”
