Thanks to previously announced Marvel movies, we can work out some spoilers for Avengers 4. For instance, the existence of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 reveals that Peter Parker will be resurrected next May. Likewise, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 suggests that Star-Lord and his friends will also be restored to life after being turned to dust by Thanos.
In fact, we can now 100% confirm that this is the case, as director James Gunn has revealed on Twitter that Vol. 3 will follow on from Avengers 4. When one fan asked if he had free reign to do what he liked with the threequel, the director replied that the movie “will have to deal with the events of Avengers 3 & 4.”
This might sound like a bit of a non-reveal – obviously Vol. 3 would be set after Avengers 4 as it’s released after it – but recent MCU movies have jumped around the timeline somewhat. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and the Wasp are both set one or two years prior to their release, for example. And Vol. 2 was set a full three years before it came out in 2017.
What this means, though, is that Guardians 3 will be set many years after its predecessor, which Gunn has told us took place six months after the first movie in 2014. A lot must have changed for the team in that time, then, which we got a glimpse of in Avengers: Infinity War. For instance, Peter and Gamora’s relationship had matured a lot from when we last saw them. Assuming that everyone makes it out alive, hopefully we’ll see more of how the dynamics between the Guardians have developed.
Chris Pratt recently confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to go before the cameras in January, and with Avengers 4 arriving in May, that might mean we’ll be able to find out who survives that movie thanks to leaks from the set. That’s a ways off from now, of course, but we’ll keep you posted with more updates on the threequel as soon as we get them.
