Previous reports have suggested that The Conjuring and Furious 7 helmer James Wan could direct Warner Brothers’ Shazam film, but now we’re hearing word that he’s the frontrunner to direct the solo Aquaman movie instead.

According to THR, Wan has not been given an official offer yet, but he is “the studio’s choice” and has already had some preliminary talks with them. That being said, there is one major hurdle that may keep him from bringing the King of Atlantis to the big screen: the sequel to Furious 7. Thus far, he hasn’t been attached to that project, and it doesn’t even have a release date yet, but after Furious 7 grossed over $500 million in one week, it’s clear that Universal will want to rev up another installment. More importantly, the studio reportedly holds an option for Wan to return and could exercise it if necessary.

Currently, the director is also attached to helm The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, but with that scheduled to film this fall and two writers still working on the Aquaman script, the director could have plenty of time to jump from one project to the other, should he choose to do so.

Starring Jason Momoa, Aquaman is set to sail into theaters on July 27th, 2018.
