Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight may be occupying a sizeable chunk of the western mindshare off the back of its grand 70mm release, but The Weinstein Company has now redirected attention toward Gavin O’Connor’s upcoming genre piece Jane Got a Gun with a new trailer and slew of images for the outlaw thriller.
Toplining the drama as the titular Jane Hammond is Natalie Portman, who begins the film alongside her doting husband Bill “Ham” Hammond (Noah Emmerich) after a narrow escape from the dastardly Bishop Boys gang. But it isn’t long before Portman’s gun-toting heroine finds a price on her head once again, leaving her with little choice but to seek help from a former flame in Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) to ward off the bandits from her and her ailing husband.
Also starring Ewan McGregor, Boyd Holbrook and Rodrigo Santoro, production woes have sandwiched O’Connor’s Jane Got a Gun into a contentious release window, and based on the reviews of The Hateful Eight, it will take something fairly remarkable to escape the shadow of Tarantino’s latest western. But January releases have surprised us in the past, and we’re hoping that the Portman-led flick proves to be more than the sum of its parts.
Emerging from the other side of a troubled stint in production, Jane Got a Gun is primed to open on January 29, and you can get acquainted with the leading cast members through the gallery below.
Jane Got a Gun centers on Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman), who has built a new life with her husband Bill “Ham” Hammond (Noah Emmerich) after being tormented by the ultra-violent Bishop Boys outlaw gang. She finds herself in the gang’s cross-hairs once again when Ham stumbles home riddled with bullets after dueling with the Boys and their relentless mastermind Colin (Ewan McGregor).
With the vengeful crew hot on Ham’s trail, Jane has nowhere to turn but to her former fiancé Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) for help in defending her family against certain destruction. Haunted by old memories, Jane’s past meets the present in a heart-stopping battle for survival.
